Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, Barry was playing in League Two. Now, he is focused to assist the head coach win the World Cup next summer. His path from player to coach commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Starting with his first major job, he built a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, and he held roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, they both test boundaries. The approach include player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a rest,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate of the trends but to surpass them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the versatility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

His desire to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars including former players. So, to build his skill set, he went into tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those won over and he hired Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants except Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club became Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
