It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
