During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
