The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
