The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his victory in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
