Alright, what did you think of this year in your household? Was it entirely positive as people post on online? Overflowing with A-grades for the kids and riotous themed fancy dress birthday parties for the grownups? Or was it a sea of letdowns with only rare entertaining highlights? And was any of it authentic, or is everyone now digitally altered virtual entities with perfect teeth?
I've assembled everyone for a reflection, ready or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in twelve months: what titles we enjoyed the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my games column."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with far better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that endlessly add to their range is you have a moment of clarity and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I will be playing this in the late night after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play any time. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite high-water mark of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I share that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I understand that it has great art and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many less comfortable things.
Close call between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and high launch costs. Both difficult to justify and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names bellowed from the doorstep at dinner time.
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it burns like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
