'Significant concern' for the touring side as Atkinson is forced off due to a hamstring issue.
Gus Atkinson added to the injury concerns plaguing England when he left the field during Saturday's play of the fourth Ashes Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson pulled up with his hamstring immediately following a delivery of the fourth over on Saturday.
The England team stated the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and required time away from the action for further assessment "in the coming hours".
The final Test in this Ashes battle in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
England have already lost key quicks Mark Wood due to knee trouble and another paceman because of a side injury on the current trip.
A replacement bowler was added to the party as cover for Wood.
Atkinson struggled early in the series, taking just a handful of scalps.
He was left out from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI.
The county bowler improved at the MCG, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, then making 28 as a batsman among just a trio of English batsmen to get into double digits.
Post a single over at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.
Unfortunately, on the final ball of that over, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and immediately felt at his leg.
Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Boxing Day Test after being left out the Adelaide game.
