A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
